Siddhi

LONELY GIRL IN THE CITY
Siddhi
She got up, dusted her clothes and picked up her pooja thali from the road.
It was the last day of Navratri and Siddhi had gone to the temple to pay her obeisance to her guardian-angel, Goddess Durga. She had moved to this city only recently for a new assignment. Her parents had been a bit wary and advised her to be careful while moving around in a new city.
The temple had a long queue of devotees and it had taken her longer than she had planned for. Rushing towards the parking in the nearby office complex, she called up her assistant to keep the documents ready for her perusal and also to reschedule her evening meeting with a new client.
A press on the remote unlocked the car doors. Just as she was nearing the car, she heard a faint cry. She looked around the few vehicles parked there but saw nobody anywhere in the desolate parking, closed as the offices were on the weekend. Shrugging off the sound as her delusion she opened the rear door to keep her pooja thali.
Then she heard it again. A muffled call 'someone help' alerted her. With tentative steps, she moved towards the nearest car-a black SUV parked a few meters away. Just then a hand banged on the window glass from inside the monster vehicle. Siddhi flipped open her cell phone and dialled 100 with trembling hands. And spoke in a clear firm authoritative voice.
Then the door opened and a young girl fell out. A burly middle aged man jumped out and pounced on her. The disheveled state of the girl and her perpetrator left no doubt in Siddhi's mind about her next move.
A brass pooja thali hit the oppressor on the head as he bent down to pick up his terrified victim. A fistful of vermilion blinded him and a sharp war cry deafened his ears.....he doubled up with pain from the mighty booted kick in his shins. Sidhhi dragged the semiconscious girl to her feet and dealt a powerful blow in the pervert's groin to finally knock him out.
Both girls spat at him. And smiled faintly. The siren from the police van could be heard closeby.
Chants from the temple floated in the wind......
या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ सिद्धिदात्री रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।
